Description

Elizabeth and Conrad Russell Research Bursaries

The Elizabeth and Conrad Russell research bursary, in collaboration with the British History in the Seventeenth Century seminar, pays for expenses incurred by scholars based outside London, United Kingdom, to carry out research in London’s libraries and archives. The proposed research can address any aspect of British history during the ‘long’ seventeenth century. Priority will be given to early-career researchers.

About the Elizabeth and Conrad Russell Research Bursaries

The aim of the bursaries is to enable researchers from outside London to carry out historical research in London’s libraries and archives (including, but not restricted to, the Institute of Historical Research, Lambeth Palace Library, the British Library, The National Archives at Kew, Dr Williams’ Library, and London Metropolitan Archives).

Early career researchers (postgraduates, postdoctoral researchers, independent researchers, and lecturers or researchers on fixed-term contracts) will be given priority.

Successful applicants will be expected to

  • Use the IHR as a base when in London
  • Participate regularly in the British History in the Seventeenth Century seminar.
  • Give a paper to the seminar

Bursaries will normally be for travel, accommodation, and/or research expenses (e.g. imaging costs).

Research can be carried out at any time between May and September 2025. We strongly encourage active participation in the seminar and in other IHR activities as appropriate. A condition of the award is that the successful applicant agrees to present a paper to the seminar early in Autumn Term 2025 (late September or early October). Papers can be delivered in-person or online.

Area of Research

Any aspect of British History in the ‘long’ seventeenth century. Research that places political, religious, and constitutional history into social and cultural, transnational and comparative, gendered and marginalised, and cross-disciplinary perspectives is strongly encouraged.

Amount awarded

Up to £750 (which may be awarded in full or split between more than one applicant)
