About Funded Events or Activities in the Festival

Here you can apply to be one of the Funded Events pr Activities which will make up the Festival of History (5-16 July 2027), convened by the Institute of Historical Research and Royal Historical Society.

The co-organisers are making available a limited number of bursaries of £500 or £1000 to support activities, specifically developed for the Festival, that require funds up to £1000. Funded activities will take place across the United Kingdom.

Please note: if you wish to apply to host an Affiliated Activity or Event, which does not require funding to take place, please apply through the Affiliated Events strand.

About the Festival of History

The Festival seeks to showcase the ‘How of History’: the practice of research and historians’ craft in recovering and recreating the past.

Central to this practice is the expertise and knowledge that informs historical research. Located in our universities, in public history networks, and with independent researchers, expert practice underpins the history we enjoy in its many different forms. In creating a programme of activities, the organisers welcome events that show and celebrate how history is made today, and engage with new work by our participants.

Submitting an application for a Funded Event or Activity

Applications are welcome from groups or networks of historians who are researching the past and communicating that research to a wide audience.

As part of your application, you’ll be asked to provide information on:

  • an application form outlining details of the applying group, the proposed event and venue.
  • a funding form outlining the amount of money being requested and a breakdown of the budget for your proposed event.
  • an equality and Diversity Monitoring Form.

How your application will be assessed

Applications will be assessed in relation to their engagement with the aims of the Festival which are provided here.

Applications for Funded activities will fulfil one or more of the following aims:

  • explore the process of  historical research: the 'how of history'
  • demonstrate the skills and training historians bring to understanding the past
  • convey the civic and other contributions of historians beyond education
  • celebration of historical practice and knowledge
  • appeal to a wide audience and bring together different groups
  • be of sufficient reach or significance to make it a candidate for funding

Key dates in the application process

  • The closing date for applications is Wednesday 6 January 2027
  • You will receive a response by Monday 8 February 2027
  • If you are successful, we will send you further information on next steps

By submitting an application, you agree - if you are successful - to send information for publication on our website (e.g. details of your public event) by required deadlines and to submit a short evaluation of your event or activity after its completion.
