IHR : Ian Roy Mid-Career IHR Library Bursary
Opens 24 Feb 2026 09:00 AM (GMT)
Deadline 15 Apr 2026 11:59 PM (BST)
£1,700.00
Description

The Ian Roy Mid-Career IHR Library Bursary is offered with the generous support of the estate of Ian Roy. Dr Roy worked on 17th-century British history and attended the IHR seminars for many decades.

PURPOSE

The bursary will be awarded to a mid-career historian working on 17th-century British history who wishes to make use of the IHR’s library collections. Eligible research will relate to Dr Roy’s many scholarly interests, including population history, the English gentry, taxation, and central and local administration, as well as the military history of the English Civil War, but any research topic on 17th-century British history will be considered.

The award holder will receive the support of the IHR’s specialist library staff and will be required to write a blog post about their research for the IHR’s On History blog.

ELIGIBILITY

The fund is open to mid-career historians who have a PhD and are working on their second or third major research project. Applicants are asked to explain which aspect of their broader research project this bursary will support; to specify which of the IHR’s collections will be used; to explain how it relates to Dr Roy’s work, and to provide a basic costing for how the funds will be used.

AWARD AMOUNT

The award amount is £1700. We anticipate that the funds will be used for travel and accommodation to facilitate time spent in London at the IHR. Other costs may be considered.
