IHR : The Dr Williams’s Trust Library Bursaries for Mid-Career Researchers 2026

The Dr Williams’s Trust has generously provided funds to support the work of mid-career historians researching the British Protestant dissenting traditions of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Trust was established in 1711 and has a strong awareness of its own heritage, including its promotion of research and wider learning.

The awards are available to scholars who have held their PhD for at least five years and who have not yet reached the rank of Professor. The funds are intended to support a period of research to be conducted within the IHR’s Wohl Library, the libraries of the School of Advanced Study, and/ or other London libraries and archives.Three awards of £3,500 each are available and may be used to support travel, accommodation, subsistence, and research expenses. Awards are not restricted to applicants based in the UK.

Those who receive the awards will be expected to use the IHR as a base when in London and to participate in its activities as appropriate. They must also write a short piece on their research for the IHR’s On History Blog. When making their application, candidates must indicate a clear journey from the work to be supported to research outputs and must acknowledge this funding within the resulting publication(s).

Applications must include:

  • A covering letter, indicating publication trajectory.
  • A CV
  • A 500 word summary of the research to be undertaken. This must be on some aspect of  the British Protestant dissenting traditions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
  • The name of one referee.
